9-11 Remembrance

9-11

Fourth grade students and teachers gathered as a ‘family’ for a remembrance of the events of 9-11-01. Each student was given an American flag sticker to wear as a reminder that September 11 is “Patriot’s Day.” The teachers had a large red poster with these words in blue “9-11 Never Forget.” Students wrote their own names on white stars and attached them to the poster. Afterwards the students heard the non-fiction story Sirius, the hero Dog of 9-11 by Hank Fellows, read aloud. The story was told from the point of view of Sirius, an actual K9 police dog that worked to assure the safety of the World Trade center twin towers. The book explained the events that occurred on September 11, 2001, on a level that the fourth graders could easily understand.
