Wonders of Seeds

IMG_1700

Last week, I visited each glass with a 30 to 40 minute lesson about the benefits of gardening, and discussed what seeds need in order to germinate and become healthy plants. I showed students samples of peat moss, compost, and top soil, which are essential ingredients in a good seed starting mix. It is a hands-on experience, as they are invited to examine each of the ingredients as we make the mix. Then, we used the mix to plant seeds and have a discussion about what plants will grow well in late summer and fall. Students will observe the seedlings in their classrooms and we will plant them in our school gardens at Flowing Wells Road in the coming weeks.
