EDS 4th Grader Hand-Codes His Own Website

Fourth grader, Matthew L. with the web page he created using HTML. He is particularly proud that the web page tells the time.

Matthew L., a fourth grader here at EDS, admits that he has always been interested in computers and how they work. His first experience coding lights for a White House Christmas tree as part of a class project in 2nd grade opened the doors to the world of coding. In both 2nd and 3rd grade his class continued working on coding using online classes through code.org. But Matthew wanted to take it a step farther.

“I’ve always just wanted to create a website… I’ve just always been interested in that,” says Matthew.

And a coding book Matthew found at the EDS book fair this year provided him with just what he was looking for. “I knew a little (about HTML) but the book really helped. Khan Academy helped too.”

Not surprisingly when asked what he wants to do when he grows up, Matthew responded without hesitation and a big grin, “A software engineer.”
