Greetings from EDS art teachers, Mrs. Heinlein and Ms. Malea!

Episcopal Day School (EDS) art class

As you may remember, Malea Breland was Kristen Heinlein’s long-term substitute while she was on maternity leave in 2016 and in 2017. EDS is thrilled to welcome Malea Breland on board as K-3rd  grade + 6th grade teacher for the 2018-2019 school year! While most of Mrs. Heinlein’s K-8 curriculum and art projects will remain the same, Mrs. Breland will be infusing her knowledge and experience as a 3-D visual artist into the classroom. In 6th grade, for example, students will spend part of the year learning brand new sculptural techniques and experiment with wire, clay, and a variety of other media.

Kristen Heinlein will spend her days at EDS overseeing the art department, working alongside Malea, and teaching 4th, 5th, 7th, and 8th grade. This new schedule will give her more time and flexibility with her two children, who both require some short term medical attention. Both Kristen and Malea truly believe that a two person visual art department will open new doors, further enrich the lives of these students, and be an all-around great thing for this community!

Malea and Kristen met when Malea’s 2 dachshunds chased her cat underneath Kristen’s car. That’s when Malea noticed an art book on the carseat. Destiny!

Kristen LOVES teaching 2-D lessons, such as painting and drawing, and Malea loves teaching sculptural 3-D lessons using various materials.

Malea studied for 7 summers in Israel (with a focus on art) and used to play the bagpipes.
