Morris Museum of Art Combining Voices Literary Competition First Place Winner!
Combining Voices is a special literary competition sponsored by the Morris Museum of Art and designed for students in grades 4 through 12. After viewing, analyzing, and discussing five paintings in the museum’s permanent collection, Mrs. McGill’s eighth grade students wrote a poem or prose piece inspired by each of the paintings. Anne Carter C. won first place in middle school poetry for her poem, River, inspired by Henry Ossawa Tanner’s oil painting, Georgia Landscape. Congratulations, Anne Carter!
River
A young man walks down
Down on an old, worn, dirt path
Path right through nature
Nature, he loves to be with
With an objective
Objective to reach his point
Point to the river
River where his journey ends
Ending with a storm
Storming from the clouds above
Above now looks gray
Gray as the river at night
Night is coming soon
Soon he will reach the river
