Attitude Trap

I can’t remember why I was sitting around last May watching the Today Show on Tuesday of the last week of school – surely there was a more productive way to spend one of my last days of freedom. And I can’t remember why (or even if) I was especially aggravated with my children that day! But there I was with Matt, Al, and Savannah when they started talking about the sense of entitlement and “the-world-revolves-around-me” attitude-trap that kids are prone to fall into these days. They HAD my attention! Then they started talking about a mom who had had enough AND actually did something about it. That mom was Kay Wyma. I watched the short segment on Kay and her book, Cleaning House: A Mom’s 12-Month Experiment to Rid her Home of Youth Entitlement, and immediately called Harriet Monnig to tell her I knew who we needed to get for our next Parent Resource Team speaker.

I have since read Kay’s book and followed her blog where, with charm, humor and self-deprecating honesty, Kay encourages and inspires parents to take back control, quit over-doing for their children, and in the process allow their children the opportunity to learn and share their own capabilities, with the goal of ultimately becoming confident and responsible citizens.

I am so happy that Kay is coming to share her story and insights with us at EDS. I would HIGHLY recommend that my fellow parents attend the two sessions: Tuesday, February 4 at 6:30 p.m. AND Wednesday, February 5 at 8:30 a.m. See this event post for more information.
