How Kay Wyma has changed my family’s lives already!

This week’s guest speaker has already made a difference in one EDS home!

“The Woman Who Makes Us Do the Areas”

That’s how the boys are now referring to Kay Wyma when I discuss her impending arrival to speak at EDS this week. Do I think that means our new “system” to increase their responsibility at home and equip them to leave and stay gone is working?  I sure hope so!

Kay’s book helped me realize that my “Army Drill Sergeant” approach to getting the boys to help out around the house is not optimal.  I have always thought they were so helpful, and they are!  Kay describes a lack of method or system at her house, but I now realize that my method of getting them to help out is just as detrimental for their post-high school self-sufficiency.  Since I wouldn’t be there to tell them what  and when to do tasks, would they actually unload the dishwasher, take out the trash, clean the bathroom and set the table?  Probably not!

I also learned the concept of being INTENTIONAL about training our children in other areas, not just those related to personal care and home ownership.  Hospitality, manners, service as well as teamwork and running errands.  Whoever thought we needed to be intentional about that?  But, putting them in front of adults they don’t know, to interact for a short transaction, in a pleasant way, while making eye contact…they definitely need this skill!

Please come see Kay this week!  I know you will gain some insight and new tools for your parenting toolbox.  If nothing else, come to compare your current plan to hers.  And – I promise you will laugh and have fun too!
